There is some confusion regarding the terminology used to denote the different types of language test in use. Most test specialist; however, agree on the following broad divisions: achievement/attainment test, proficiency test, aptitude test and diagnostic test, Formative test and Summative test
There is some confusion regarding the terminology used to denote the different types of language test in use. Most test specialist; however, agree on the following broad divisions: achievement/attainment test, proficiency test, aptitude test and diagnostic test, Formative test and Summative test
1. Achievement/Attainment Test
This group can be further subdivided into class progress tests and (standardized) achievement tests.
test is only evaluated by class teacher because just he or she that has clear progress about his or her students.
2. Proficiency Test
Proficiency test is a type of test that concerns on specific skill and based on what the students will do with their own specific skill in their future performance of a particular task.
3. Aptitude Test
A language Aptitude test is a type of test that intended to measure student’s probable performance in learning a foreign language. Generally, this test is not only measure student’s probable but also measures student’s strengthens and weakness in learning a foreign language.
4. Diagnostic Test
Diagnostic tests is a type of test which is intended to diagnose the difficulty area of a test so the appropriate remedial can be taken later. This test is just carried out for group rather than individual. It means that if there are many students who make an error, the teacher will plan appropriate remedial teaching, but if there is only one or two who makes error the remedial will not be taken. [1]
5. Summative Test
According to Drs. Wilmar Tambunan, summative test is intended to show the standard which the students have now reached in relation to other students at the same stage. The main purpose of it is grading or certification of the pupil’s achievement. Summative test is generally conducted after all of
materials units have been studied. It is very useful to know how far the curricular purposes have been achieved by the students.[1]
6. Formative Test
Formative test can be understood as progress achievement test in which it is intended to monitor learning progress during the instruction and to provide continuous feedback to both pupil and teacher concerning learning successes and failures
